As we will soon be officially celebrating the Christmas Holiday season this coming week, I have one more related writing inspired by listening to an indie artist’s original Christmas song whose message got me reflecting more.
First though I have a question for you.
Is that a trick question? Well, maybe! 🙂
Are you a wise man…but not based by the standards of this world?
Are you a truly wise man based on Biblical examples?
Let me share some Bible verses, a song and a few thoughts as you reflect on that question in your life.
Only Matthew’s Gospel shares the story of The Visit of the Magi which I want to explore with you this week zeroing in on some particular verses.
Matthew 2:1-2 says, “When Jesus was born in the village of Bethlehem in Judea, Herod was king. During this time some wise men from the east came to Jerusalem and said, “Where is the child born to be king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him.” (CEV)
Matthew 2:9-11 says, “The wise men listened to what the king said and then left. And the star they had seen in the east went on ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. They were thrilled and excited to see the star. When the men went into the house and saw the child with Mary, his mother, they knelt down and worshiped him. They took out their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh and gave them to him.” (CEV)
Putting a little twist on the term “Wise Man,” from these verses what can we conclude a wise man is?
1-One who knew the “special” star signified the birth of a King
2-One who went looking for Jesus to behold Him with their own eyes
3-One who was thrilled and excited to find where Jesus was
4-One who knelt down and worshiped Jesus
5-One who brought special gifts to Jesus
What a wonderful example the wise men are for us even today!
So, let me ask you again….are you a wise man?
–Have you caught the vision of the special star in your life?
–Have you asked Jesus into your heart and life?
–Are you thrilled and excited to see Jesus at work in your life?
—Do you take time to worship Jesus?
—Is your life your gift to Jesus?
My thoughts turned to wise men this week because my heart has been filled with joy and peace in listening to a song entitled Wise Men Still Seek Him sung by Weston Skaggs. Click the link to take a listen and/or read the lyrics below:
WISE MEN STILL SEEK HIM
Words and Music by Weston Skaggs, Anthony Hoisington & Chris Hoisington
They rode these kings on the backs of humble beasts
To follow the prophesied star
Yes they rode through the dust to meet God With Us
For no other had done so before
And wise men still seek him now
Wise men still seek him now
Those who lay down their pride and turn to the light
Wise men still seek him now
They set their faces to follow the light
They wouldn’t turn back ‘til they found
It had stopped over – head a little wooden shed
Where salvation inside gently lay
And wise men still seek him now
Wise men still seek him now
Those who lay down their pride and turn to the light
Wise men still seek him now
You don’t have to wait til the snowflakes fall
To answer the call
You don’t have to ride o’er the desert far and wide
Just open the door to your heart
And wise men still seek him now
Wise men still seek him now
Those who lay down their pride and turn to the light
Wise men still seek him now
Open your heart, let Him in, that’s a start
Be a wise man: seek him now
Yes, be a wise man seeking Him now….
Lay down your pride~
Turn to the light~
Open your heart~
And let Him in!

As you go about all the festivities of the season this week, try to keep your focus on the true meaning of Christmas~~celebrating the birth of Christ, our Savior!
Be reminded of the Wise Men back in Jesus’ day and remember that even today…..
Be very careful, then, how you live–not as unwise but as wise. –Ephesians 5:15 (NIV)
You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. –Jeremiah 29:13 (NIV)
I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently find me. –Proverbs 8:17 (ESV)
O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. –Psalm 63:1 (ESV)
(Note: I will take a two week break from posting new thoughts to enjoy celebrating the birth of Jesus and more family time. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!)
