Someone said, “You need to walk the beach in the rain.” I decided to take that advice and started my stroll during a light rain that eventually stopped. While walking along the shoreline with the warm water engulfing my feet, the desolate beach was delightful and peaceful.
On my morning beach walks, the beauty of the white sea foam that was washing up and seemed to remain for a while on the shore caught my attention. Sometimes the wind would start blowing some sections of the foam together, making it tumble and roll along the sand quickly.
While doing a little research on sea foam, I found it occurs when dissolved organic matter in the ocean, such as salt, algae, and other pollutants, is churned up. When the ocean is agitated by the wind and waves sea foam is produced to a greater degree. All of God’s creations are spectacular and amazing.
I see parallels between human lives and sea foam. To me, the sea foam represents our lives. The Holy Spirit represents the wind and the waves in our lives that produce peace and beauty even during the storms. We need to join with others, represented by the clumps of foam that formed together, rolling as one, as we share our lives with others. We journey together, helping each other through both the rough and calm waters of life.
Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work. –Ephesians 4:14-16 (NIV)
As we mature in our faith, we glean more wisdom from the Holy Spirit about living in the truth of God’s Word and not getting caught up in the wrong path of truth. We can withstand the wind and waves that try to take us off the right course. Christ is the head of all and the foundation of our lives. We each are a special part of His body and are joined with Him as we work together to build up and share His love with each other.
Be encouraged this week to…
…seek the Holy Spirit’s gifts of peace and beauty in the storms.
…join with those in your path to help each other navigate the waters.
…share your gifts to build up the Body of Christ.
REFLECTION:
What beauty has God made from the wind and waves in your life?
Who is God showing you to help through the rough waters?
The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit. –John 3:8 (NIV)
