BLINDED

Two thoughts that came to mind as I had the honor, on Mother’s Day this year, to hold and love three boys in the NICU. It was a great blessing as it was only the third time in 4 1/2 months that they needed help as the census has been so low.  I know that is a good thing for the little ones and their parents.  🙂

The first quote is from the opening of a song entitled, “Greater than You Know” by Weston Skaggs. It is a song that is playing often in my car or on my phone; one that ministers to my soul no matter how many times I play it, which as you can guess is frequently!

The Bible verse was from a sermon, that was very meaningful which even brought some tears to my eyes, I heard at church right before heading to the NICU.

++++++++++++

As soon as I scrubbed up after arriving at the NICU, I was able to hold a boy that was bundled in a blue light mat with the head band wrapped around his head and eyes to protect his eyes from the lights.  The blue light mat is sometimes necessary for newborns who exhibit signs of jaundice.

It was “different” not being able to gaze upon this guy’s whole face or look into his eyes or at his eyes if he was sleeping.

With holding the additional bigger, somewhat bulky mat I did feel like “my arms will hold you like the ark” sometimes needing to wrap both my arms around him and the mat along with the different tubes he had connected.  I was holding him to “keep you from harm” and I am hoping he sensed that peace as the words of the song echoed in my mind.

Seeing him blindfolded, protecting his precious eyes from the bright lights, made me think to tell him “you have no need to fear the dark.”  God was with him protecting him; this darkness would only be temporary.

I was reflecting on how the Scripture verses I had just heard were also applicable to this little guy. He really only could rely on his sense of hearing right then; not his sight.  My voice was hopefully a soothing reassurance telling him everything was really okay.

I bet he knows his shepherd’s voices (his parents) and when they come to visit him soothes him even more, hearing those familiar voices, possibly even bringing a smile to his face.  No one or no thing could snatch the comfort and safety of that little one.

Gazing upon his face, not knowing what color his eyes even are or the shape of them, made me think about…

How often are we blinded to God’s love or presence in our life?
How long do we reject Him though He reveals Himself in even the simple, little things in life?
Sometimes we are blinded for years before we come to know Him and accept Him as our Lord.

Even after that…

Are we blinded to people He puts in our path that we could minister to or bless?
Do we continually see Him guiding and directing each step of our life?

This week in case you need a simple reminder and encouragement remember:

The Lord is my light and my salvation– whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life– of whom shall I be afraid?  –Psalm 27:1  (NIV)

The Lord keeps you from all harm and watches over your life.   –Psalm 121:7  (NLT)

He will cover you with his wings; you will be safe in his care; his faithfulness will protect and defend you.  –Psalm 91:4 (GNT)

See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me.  –Isaiah 49:16  (NIV)
