JOURNEYING WITH PAUL TO EPHESUS

Greetings, my dear pilgrims. We leave with Paul from Corinth as we travel to Ephesus, which is located in Turkey. Turkey is unique in that a small portion is located in Europe while the majority is in Asia. Ephesus, currently known as Kusadasi, is near the west coast of Asia and is the fourth largest city of the Roman Empire. Its spectacular Roman structures still possess glory two thousand years later. It was a major seaport in Paul’s time for both the Greek world and then the Roman Empire.

Our early morning arrival to Ephesus (Kusadasi)

Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman, here is your son,” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.  –John 19:25-27  (NIV)

We know that when Jesus was on the cross, He entrusted the care of Mary, His mother, to the beloved disciple, who we believe is John. Jesus, even while suffering, was concerned that His mother would be taken care of after His death; it was an important part of the culture. Continue reading “JOURNEYING WITH PAUL TO EPHESUS”

JOURNEYING WITH PAUL TO THESSALONICA

Greetings, my fellow pilgrims. I hope you enjoyed our visits last week and are ready to travel on. As we continue to follow in St. Paul’s footsteps on his second missionary journey and leave Lydia’s house in Philippi, we head a little northwest and make a quick stop at Amphipolis, in Greek Macedonia.

Paul and Silas then traveled through the towns of Amphipolis and Apollonia and came to Thessalonica, where there was a Jewish synagogue.  –Acts 17:1  (NLT)

We know that the next major town that Paul and Silas went to was Thessalonica. To get there, they had to go through Amphipolis and Apollonia. Since the Scriptures do not give us any other information on the two towns, it is probably safe to assume they did not preach at either place on this journey. JOURNEYING WITH PAUL TO PHILIPPI

Paul’s secondary missionary journey took place AD 49-51, during which time Silas, Timothy, Priscilla and Aquila, and Luke accompanied him to some of the places. The journey began in Asia and was the first time the gospel message spread to Europe. As we journey, we will be reading Scriptures taken from Acts 15:36-Acts 18:22. I pray the stories will come alive for you as we travel together to some of the major cities where Paul spread the good news of Jesus Christ.

This map shows the general location of several stops on Paul’s second missionary journey that we will pilgrimage to during the next few weeks. Continue reading “JOURNEYING WITH PAUL TO PHILIPPI”

CARRY BURDENS

While at work, on a short walk to stretch my legs, I ran into a man who works for a different company in the same building that I work in. It has been a few months since I have seen him, and I wondered how his family and his son were doing. I have been praying for the whole family as they lovingly and faithfully continue to care for their son, who requires 24/7 care.

Through a series of occasional orchestrations, eight months ago I shared a book of mine with him. At that time, I was blessed to learn some of his story. He has a 30-year-old son who was born blind and has several health issues that have worsened over the years. Some of the latest issues include trying to control his diabetes, which has unfortunately not improved since I saw him last. I was sad to hear that. Continue reading “CARRY BURDENS”

BOAST IN WEAKNESSES

Have you ever read a Scripture passage you’ve seen many times before, but one particular day it was so powerful and took on special meaning?

I recently experienced that blessing on the night before the launch of my second book, God’s Love Illuminated. I had been feeling peaceful all week after my Pastor prayed over me. Well, that peace lasted until that night when I laid awake for a long time. I began reading email devotions.

At 2:30 am, God used a Proverbs 31 devotion entitled “You Don’t Have to be Amazing” to minister to my spirit. It featured the following Scripture passage. In the thoughts the writer was sharing, the word “boast” was italicized and jumped out at me. Continue reading “BOAST IN WEAKNESSES”

GOD’S GRACE

God’s Grace~~

A thought that occurred to me one particular day when I could not stop thanking God for His goodness and grace.

When we think of God’s Grace, I believe the first thing that usually comes to our mind is God’s Grace in relation to our salvation.  Grace is most commonly defined as “the free and unmerited favor of God.”  Because of God’s Grace to us, He sent His only Son, Jesus, to earth, to die for our sins; for our salvation.  Grace is a free gift from God to us!

In researching different definitions about the word Grace, I found one site that listed seven of them.  I am going to zero in on two of those which are applicable to these thoughts this week:
